Overview
Pimpri Chinchwad University (PCU) celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India with a solemn Flag Hoisting Ceremony held on 15 August 2026 at the PCU Lawns. The celebration brought together the university leadership, faculty members, staff, students and parents in a spirit of national pride and collective responsibility.
The ceremony was graced by Shri. Harshwardhan S. Patil, Hon’ble Chancellor, Pimpri Chinchwad University, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Santosh S. Sonavane, Vice Chancellor, PCU, and Dr. Anil Maheshwari, Registrar, PCU, also joined the university community in commemorating this significant national occasion.
Honouring the Spirit of Freedom
The ceremony commenced with the arrival of the dignitaries, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and the National Anthem. The Tricolour served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of freedom fighters and the values that continue to shape the nation.
In his address, Dr. Anil Maheshwari, Registrar, PCU, reflected on the symbolism of the National Flag and the Ashoka Chakra, emphasising the importance of respecting and protecting the freedom earned through immense sacrifice. He highlighted the ideals of peace, truth, progress and prosperity that the nation continues to strive towards.
Dr. Santosh S. Sonavane, Vice Chancellor, PCU, expressed his immense pleasure at being part of the 80th Independence Day celebration and highlighted the important role of students as the nation's future strength. He encouraged students to recognise their potential and understand their responsibility towards society and the country.
Addressing the gathering, Shri. Harshwardhan S. Patil, Hon’ble Chancellor, PCU, spoke about the honour of celebrating Independence Day together as proud Indians. He remembered the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and encouraged students to look beyond the classroom, develop ideas, create solutions and use their education for the larger benefit of society.
He also emphasised that today's youth have an important role in shaping India's future and encouraged PCU students to make meaningful contributions through knowledge, innovation, technology, healthcare, content creation and other areas that can positively impact society.
Celebrating Achievement and Talent
The Independence Day celebration also included the felicitation of PCU's toppers and achievers, recognising their academic dedication and excellence. Their accomplishments reflected the values of hard work, perseverance and commitment that the university seeks to nurture among its students.
The programme further featured a special reflection on Independence by Kedara Kulkarni, followed by soulful cultural performances that added colour and emotion to the celebration.
From Freedom to Responsibility
The celebration concluded with a meaningful tree plantation initiative organised by the SDG Cell at the PCU campus.
The initiative reinforced an important message: independence is not only about enjoying the rights and opportunities we have today, but also about accepting responsibility for the future we create.
Whether as students, educators, professionals or citizens, each individual carries a different degree of responsibility towards society. At PCU, this responsibility is reflected through education, innovation, sustainability, social contribution and the development of responsible future leaders.
The 80th Independence Day celebration at PCU was therefore more than a ceremonial occasion. It was a reminder that the freedom inherited from previous generations must be respected, protected and strengthened through meaningful action.
